Welcome to AutoCollege.org, a leading organization dedicated to helping people pursue a career in the automotive industry.  We’ve put together a great website for those interested in obtaining an automotive education and we hope the information contained within our site helps you successfully pursue an automotive career.  Below is a step by step guide on how to get started…Good luck!

Step 1:  Select a Type of Mechanic College

First off, we we highly recommend you thoroughly think this through before proceeding any further.  Make sure that you have reviewed career descriptions and have a good grasp on what your life will be like as an auto, motorcycle, or marine mechanic.  Just because you like to tinker around with cars doesn’t necessarily mean you should become a mechanic.  An automotive mechanic education is not only time consuming and takes a lot of effort, but it also costs money so be sure you want to pursue this type of career before committing to any of the automotive schools out there.  Do your homework!

Now assuming you have done your due diligence and decided that pursuing a career in mechanics is right for you, then you need to figure out what type of mechanic you want to become.  To start with, there are 3 main categories that you need to choose from.

  • Automotive Mechanic
  • Motorcycle Mechanic
  • Marine Mechanic

The type of mechanical career you wish to pursue will determine what type of program you will be looking for and will enable you to hone in on the colleges that provide the best program for your career.

Step 2:  What’s Most Important to You? Prioritize!

Now that you’ve selected the type of mechanic you want to become you can focus on the “fun” part…choosing a mechanic college!  When it comes to selecting an automotive mechanic college or one of the many motorcycle mechanic schools, it is a very personal decision.  Some auto colleges might be great for particular students, while they may not be so great for others.  So, what is the most important thing to you when considering your education?  Is it location?  Is it cost?  Below is a list of items one should consider when choosing automotive mechanic colleges.

  • Location:  Do you want a college near you?  Are you willing to relocate, and if so, how far?
  • Flexibility:  Are you planning on working while going to school? If so, find schools that offer flexible class schedules, night programs, and online courses.
  • Faculty:  Who is teaching the classes?  Do they have real world experience?
  • Job Placement:  What type of reputation does this school have with the working world? Do they have a career center?  Do they assist you with job placement?  What percentage of students that graduate find jobs?
  • Cost:  How much can you afford to invest into your education?  Does the college offer financial aid or scholarships?

Think long and hard about the above listed items and write them down in order of importance.  Then move on to the final step.

Step 3:  Find and Research Automotive Mechanic Colleges

Now that you have a type of mechanic program that you want to pursue and a list of items that are most important to you it’s time to find that perfect school!  There are a ton of sites out there, including ours, that provide a complete directory of automotive, motorcycle, and marine mechanic colleges.  In addition to allowing users to search and find schools by location, users are allowed to request additional information packets from schools they are interested in attending completely free of charge.  This can be a great tool to further research each college so that you can find the best auto mechanic college based on your career objectives and items of importance.

Good luck…we hope you find the perfect school for YOU!
